Bargaining Update - DirectWest – January 25, 2018

posted Jan 28, 2018, 5:11 PM by Gail Sawatzky

As per the Saskatchewan Employment Act, notice to begin bargaining must be served by either the employer or the Union 60 days prior to the expiration of the Collective Agreement.  As you’ll recall, the DirectWest Collective was extended for 1 year from March 19, 2017.  This meant the new expiration date would be March 19, 2018.

Notice to bargain for the March 19, 2018 contract needed to be given by January 18, 2018.  This notice was not given by either party which extends the contract by another year.  The new expiry date for the DirectWest Collective Agreement will be March 19, 2019.  All benefits and language in the Collective Agreement will remain as is.

Bargaining Update June 14, 2017

posted Jun 14, 2017, 11:13 AM by Greg Olson

The Bargaining Committee met with DirectWest on June 13th to further discuss cost containment.  The Bargaining Committee clearly stated we will not make any changes to our Collective Agreement.  We have a closed Collective Agreement and no mandate from our membership to make changes.

However, we also stated we are willing to discuss, help and provide ideas for the company to save money and increase revenue and dividends paid to the government outside of the Collective Agreement.

It is important to remember, we are a revenue source for the government.  We are not an expense.  The source of the savings from DirectWest should be irrelevant and not be limited as the SaskParty government wants.  The Bargaining Committee wants to help DirectWest and we have provided many ideas and solutions outside of cuts to your wages and benefits.

We have no confirmed dates for the next cost containment meetings at this time.

We appreciate all your support at rally’s, writing letters to MLA’s, signing petitions and sharing information through social media.  Please stay tuned for additional actions you can participate in to continue the pressure on MLA’s and fight back against the mean-spirited austerity cuts of this government and the privatization through Bill 40.

Bargaining Update - April 20, 2017

posted Apr 20, 2017, 6:29 PM by Gail Sawatzky

Your Bargaining Committee met with DirectWest on April 19th regarding cost containment.

DirectWest provided our Bargaining Committee with detailed information of cost containment areas for consideration.  These areas included wage rollbacks, unpaid days off and reduction in time worked each day.

Consultation is important for our Union, and an obligation for our Union.  We are willing to listen to and discuss DirectWest’s requests regarding cost containment.

It is important to remember we have a closed Collective Agreement which was negotiated in good faith, approved by the government and ratified by you, the membership, and which carries on until March 19, 2018.  There is no mandate to open our Collective Agreement and any changes would be subject to a ratification vote by our members.

The Bargaining Committee will review, analyze and discuss the information provided by DirectWest.  The specific details will not be released to protect the integrity of the consultation process.

We have a follow-up meeting tentatively scheduled for the week of June 12th and a caucus scheduled for April 27th.

Bargaining Update - February 17, 2017

posted Feb 20, 2017, 5:12 PM by Gail Sawatzky

Our DirectWest Collective agreement is set to expire March 19, 2017.  As you may be aware there has been a lot of media coverage around the provincial deficit and related wage mandates of zero percent over 4 years with additional concessions and claw-backs from Collective Agreements in other Crown Corporation and government sectors.

The bargaining committee discussed the situation and decided to not send a notice to bargain to DirectWest within the 60 day minimum and 120 day maximum time frame, from the expiry of our Collective Agreement, as per Section 6-26(2) of the Saskatchewan Employment Act.  It is important to note, both parties have the right to give notice during this period and DirectWest chose not to give notice either.

Since notice was not given by either party section 6-39(1) of the Saskatchewan Employment act takes effect allowing the Collective Agreement to remain in force from year to year.  This means our Collective Agreement will remain in effect as a closed Collective Agreement until March 19, 2018.

As you may be aware a “Cost Containment” meeting was held between SaskTel and Unifor on February 14th.  Some of the suggestions SaskTel presented and asked the Union to consider are as follows:
  • Freeze in wage progression
  • Eliminate our 2017 increase of 1.65% and 2018 1.2%
  • Lump sum payments from Health Spending Account - $210 – 2017, $490 – 2018 – which is our own money
  • Changing the rate of over-time pay from double time to time and a half
  • Additional unpaid leave – up to 5 extra days off a year without pay
  • Reduction in the hours worked per day with associated pay decrease
DirectWest has requested a similar meeting with the DirectWest bargaining committee.  A date for this meeting has not been established.

We will keep you informed of any meetings with DirectWest.
